WASHINGTON, D.C., September 5, 2023 – Enrique Tarrio, the former national chairman of the far-right Proud Boys, received a 22-year prison sentence on Tuesday for his involvement in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. This marks the lengthiest sentence delivered thus far in relation to the events of that day.
Tarrio’s Role in the Capitol Riot
A U.S. District Judge imposed the sentence on Tarrio, aged 39, hailing from Miami, Florida. Tarrio’s conviction centered on seditious conspiracy charges related to his role in orchestrating the riot, which aimed to obstruct Congress from confirming President Joe Biden’s victory over then-President Donald Trump in an election contested by Trump due to unfounded claims of widespread fraud.
Tarrio’s Defense and the Judge’s Verdict
In his defense, Tarrio’s legal team argued that his absence from Washington on January 6, due to a prior court order, meant he had no direct influence on the riot. However, the judge, in delivering the sentence, emphatically stated, “Mr. Tarrio was the ultimate leader of that conspiracy. Mr. Tarrio was the ultimate leader, the ultimate person who organized, who was motivated by revolutionary zeal.”
Prosecutors’ Perspective
Prosecutors contended that Tarrio maintained connections with the Proud Boys group and closely monitored their activities. Assistant U.S. Attorneys asserted that Tarrio occupied a unique and influential position within the Proud Boys. Prosecutors had sought a 33-year sentence for Tarrio, citing his alleged role in directing the attack from another location, while the defense sought no more than 15 years.
Similar Cases and Tarrio’s Apology
Judge Kelly had previously sentenced another Proud Boys leader to a significant term, and in court on Tuesday, Tarrio expressed remorse for his actions, stating, “I am extremely ashamed and disappointed” about the violence on that fateful day. He added, “What happened on January 6 was a national embarrassment.”
Broader Impact and Ongoing Investigations
The Capitol assault has resulted in over 1,100 arrests on various charges. Of these, more than 630 individuals have pleaded guilty, and over 110 have been convicted at trial. Tragically, five people, including a police officer, lost their lives during or shortly after the riot, while over 140 police officers sustained injuries. The damage to the Capitol building amounted to millions of dollars.
Special Counsel Jack Smith, appointed to investigate broader efforts related to the 2020 election, has also brought charges against former President Donald Trump, who remains a prominent figure in the political landscape
